The congress has been held for more than 50 years initially every four years and more recently every two.  The host society is selected to ensure opportunity to attend is provided to burns professionals in all parts of the world.  As a result the congress location has been rotating globally, to date being held in 13 different countries.

The very first International Congress on Research in Burns was held in Bethesda, Maryland USA in September 1960 which was followed by the second Congress in the city of Edinburgh, Scotland in 1965 and now, 47 years on, we are back in Edinburgh for the 16th congress in 2012.

Historic attendance at the International Society for Burn Injuries global congress

The attendees are a blend of physicians, PhD, nurses, rehabilitation specialists, and other specialties devoted to burn and wound care.  Attendance has historically been around the 750-mark but, with the inclusion of the British Burn Association Annual Meeting in 2012, it is hoped the audience potential will be closer to 1,000.
