As president of the International Society for Burn Injuries I have the great honour and privilege to invite you to the 16th Congress of the ISBI in Edinburgh, Scotland. The return of the ISBI to this magnificent city is of special significance to our Society. Edinburgh was the venue for the second ISBI international Congress, in 1965, at which the decision was made to establish a permanent organization. The meeting was hosted by A.B. Wallace, CBE, founding father of the ISBI and its first General Secretary. Since then the ISBI has become firmly established as the major global forum for the exchange of knowledge and experience among professionals working in the field of burns.
The 16th congress will present a comprehensive program to provide a platform for the latest advances in burn related medicine and science. At the same time, there will be ample facility to discuss advances in nursing, rehabilitation and other topics related to burn care in general.
Above all, there will be multiple opportunities to discuss the challenge of providing a decent standard of burn care globally. The ISBI is deeply committed to this cause: As A.B.. Wallace stated in 1965, "The delegates of the Edinburgh Congress aim to set up a permanent organization in the hope of reducing the incidence of this major scourge, as well as improving patient care, especially in developing countries.”
I am deeply grateful to Dr. Keith Judkins, Chair of the Program Committee, and to the British Burn Association for their commitment to the success of the 2012 meeting. Edinburgh is a wonderful, vibrant city with a wealth of cultural and historic settings. The congress will provide a unique opportunity in pleasant surroundings to renew friendships and meet new colleagues involved in the provision of burn care.
In an echo of Mr. Wallace´s statement, the 2012 congress has embraced the theme “One World, One Standard of Burn Care”. I invite you most sincerely to participate in this important conference.
Welcome!
